The usual dictionary answer is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, with 45 letters. The qualification matters: the answer depends on which dictionary you use and whether you include invented words, chemical names or words used in everyday life.
Four long English words compared
| Word | Letters | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis | 45 | A dictionary curiosity referring to a lung disease associated with inhaled dust. It was constructed for its length, rather than established as an ordinary clinical term. |
| supercalifragilisticexpialidocious | 34 | A playful word popularized by Mary Poppins. Its invented origin does not stop dictionaries from recording it. |
| floccinaucinihilipilification | 29 | The act of treating something as worthless; a rare word, usually discussed as a curiosity. |
| antidisestablishmentarianism | 28 | A historical term for opposition to removing the Church of England's established status. |
Why there is more than one answer
A dictionary records selected vocabulary; it is not a list of every possible word. Some dictionaries include specialist terms that others omit. Chemical naming systems can also produce extremely long names, such as the expanded name associated with the protein titin. These are a different category from ordinary dictionary headwords. Counting them produces a different contest.
Oxford dictionary editor Ben Zimmer explains this distinction in his discussion of long words. Dictionary.com also separates dictionary entries from chemical names. Neither an impressive length nor a dictionary entry tells you how useful a word will be in conversation.
A more useful five-minute vocabulary exercise
You do not need to memorize a 45-letter word to improve your English. Instead, practise noticing parts that occur in useful word families.
- kind → unkind: the prefix un- changes the meaning to “not kind.”
- kind → kindness: the suffix -ness forms a noun for the quality.
- happy → unhappy → unhappiness: notice both the change in meaning and the spelling change from y to i before -ness.
Word parts are clues, not a guarantee. Check a dictionary and a complete example sentence before using an unfamiliar word.
Try it: choose a word from the families above
- Thank you for your ______. You helped me when I needed it.
- It was ______ to laugh at someone else's mistake.
- She felt ______ because she had missed the train.

Quick questions
Is antidisestablishmentarianism the longest English word?
It has 28 letters. It is a famous example, but the 45-letter dictionary word above is longer. A “longest” claim needs a stated rule for what counts.
Is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious a real word?
It is a playful invented word that dictionaries record. “Invented” and “not in a dictionary” do not mean the same thing.
Should English learners use very long words?
Choose a word because it expresses your meaning and suits your audience. In many everyday situations, a short familiar expression is clearer.
